【摘要】

Radio science encompasses the study of electromagnetic waves and fields, examining their origins and interactions with various materials, with applications spanning a wide range of technological domains.  Rooted in early observations of magnetism and electricity, the field has advanced through pivotal developments like Coulomb’s law. Simultaneously, breakthroughs in optics revealed the behavior of light, leading to James Clerk Maxwell's 1860s unification of light and electromagnetism. This foundational discovery open new avenues for innovation. Today, electromagnetic waves interact with materials such as optical fibers for high-speed data transmission, while plasma-based materials further enhance control over these waves.  Although it took 25 years before Hertz experimentally proved the existence of radio waves, the path towards wireless radio communications was open (Marconi and Popov), as well as towards all the geophysical and astronomical applications of radio science which are covered by the activities of our scientific union, URSI. This talk will review a brief history of radio science.
