Recently, the editor-in-chief of “Progress in Quantum Electronics” invited Prof. Pengfei Tian et al. to write a review on full-colour micro-LED display. The paper named “Growth, transfer printing and colour conversion techniques towards full-colour micro-LED display” has been published. “Progress in Quantum Electronics” is an internationally renowned review journal, having a 3-year average impact factor of 8.95. The review was jointly completed by Fudan University, National Chiao Tung University and University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. Xiaojie Zhou and Prof. Pengfei Tian are first authors. Prof. Pengfei Tian and Prof. Hao-Chung Kuo are corresponding authors.

The review systematically discusses the growth technology, transfer printing technology and colour conversion technology for full-colour micro-LED display. The content comes from a large number of papers and patents, focusing on the mechanism, techniques, advantages and disadvantages of three key technologies. Ultra-high-resolution display can be achieved by growth technology, including the growth of nanowire LED, multi-colour quantum well micro-LED and nanoring LED. The transfer printing technology is a key technology to achieve full-colour micro-LED display, including PDMS stamp pick & place technique, laser selective-release transfer technique, electrostatic pick-up transfer technique, electromagnetic pick-up transfer technique and fluidic transfer technique. The colour conversion technology is another typical method to realize full-colour micro-LED display, which contains printing technology, UV self-aligning curing technology and inorganic film colour conversion technology.

At present, the micro-LED display market is still in its infancy and has not yet been expanded to a large scale, which is not only an opportunity but also a challenge for us. Many companies including Apple, Samsung, Sony, Sharp and BOE have invested in the crucial techniques for full-colour micro-LED display, such as transfer techniques. In the future, large-area, low-cost and high-efficiency micro-LED displays are expected to become an important future display technique.
