Approved by China’s Ministry of Education (MOE), the Engineering Research Center of Advanced Lighting Technology was founded in Fudan University on December 22, 2009.

The mission of the Center, in line with the national strategy on science and technology development, is to enhance innovation capability and core competence of China’s lighting technology. The purposes of the Center are to advance excellence in independent research and development, and industrialization of new lighting technologies, to promote a close partnership between industry, education and government, to build a strong R&D team of high quality staff, and so as to ensure sustainable development of lighting technology and industry.

Under the leadership of China’s Ministry of Education and with the support by Fudan University and enterprises such as Zhejiang Yankon Lighting Co., Ltd., Shanghai Yaming Lighting Co., Ltd., Shanghai Mikia Lighting Co., Ltd., and Ningbo Sunpu-Opto Semiconductor Co., Ltd., the establishment of the Center has progressed rapidly in the past two years. The objective of the Center is to continuously enhance its capability of leading or participating in key national and regional projects, and international cooperative programs, and to commercialize the R&D results through the partnership with industry and government. The Center aims to lift itself to an internationally competitive level in lighting technology within three to five years and to a world leading position within ten years.

The Director takes full responsibility for the administration of the Center under the supervision of the Council. A Working Group on Education and Research (WGER) serves as the operation team.  An International Consultant committee and a Technical Advisory Committee are set up by international and domestic experts and scholars. Solid foundation has been laid to ensure smooth operation of the Center and to reach its objectives. Currently the Center is focused on research on the applications of solid state lighting (SSL), gas discharge light sources, frontier lighting technology, lighting electric technology and lighting optoelectronic technology.

The center is composed of five research groups and one coordinating office responsible for the partnership with industry and government:
