Abstract

The world is going through a period of rapidly changing technological and social trends. From pure functional needs in lighting applications in the past, nowadays, emotional and social requirements lead us to new lighting solutions which are mainly based on LED light sources. LEDs have a number of properties that make them more flexible than conventional light sources, as to allow variations in the amount, distribution and spectrum of the light emitted. It is the potential of this flexibility to enhance human performance, comfort and safety.

In recent decades, information and communication technologies have become an increasingly important part of people’s lives and of society as a whole and generate huge opportunities for the creation of new intelligent, connected solutions that enable the lighting systems to be controlled and managed remotely and smartly both in indoor and outdoor. Today’s and future lighting application solutions, in addition to “prerequisite fundamental requirements” for achieving appropriate lighting quality, would be focused on personalization, interaction and connectivity. However, the absence of the “updated” quantitative metrics for evaluating those prerequisite fundamental requirements and therefore the lighting quality could be the general problem that would affect all attempts of extensively transforming the lighting application concepts of the past, for the future.
