Abstract
The last decades medical technology improved and new treatment modalities were introduced. As a result the survival of premature infants has increased substantially. It has been found that surviving premature infants show more developmental disorders and cognitive problems, so that their school performance is less compared to their full term counterparts. Apart from medical factors two other factors are identified that contribute to the developmental impairments: pain and stress that the infants experience during their stay at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and separation from their mother. Our research is aimed towards the development and design of technologies to reduce pain and stress for newborn infants in the NICU and technologies to promote mother child bonding. During the presentation examples of this research will be shown.
